Panama is currently housing nearly 300 individuals from various nations in a hotel, a situation arising from their deportation under the administration of former US President Donald Trump. These individuals are being prevented from leaving the premises as they await the coordination of their repatriation by international authorities. According to officials, over 40 percent of these migrants have expressed a reluctance to return to their countries of origin voluntarily. Distress signals have been displayed by the migrants, with messages such as “Help” and “We are not safe in our country” visible from their hotel windows. The group comprises individuals from ten predominantly Asian nations, including Iran, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and China, among others. The United States faces challenges in directly deporting individuals to some of these countries, leading to Panama being utilized as a temporary holding location. Additionally, Costa Rica is anticipated to receive a similar flight carrying third-country deportees on Wednesday.
