A team from Microsoft Threat Analysis has issued a warning that China will utilize AI-generated content to promote its own interests. While the impact of such content on election results is expected to be minimal, China’s efforts to enhance memes, videos, and audio through experimentation are likely to continue and potentially become more effective in the future.
The tech giant has revealed that China is employing fake social media accounts to poll voters on divisive issues, aiming to sow division and potentially influence the outcome of the US presidential election in its favor. Additionally, China has been increasingly using AI-generated content to advance its objectives globally.
North Korea, on the other hand, has been involved in cryptocurrency theft and supply chain attacks to support its military goals and intelligence gathering, while also adopting AI to enhance its operations. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-affiliated actors have already begun posing controversial questions on US domestic issues through deceptive social media accounts, possibly to gain insights into the key issues that divide US voters.
This could be an attempt to gather intelligence and target specific voting demographics ahead of the US presidential election. China’s geopolitical priorities remain consistent, but it has intensified its focus and enhanced the sophistication of its influence operations attacks.
