02 Dec 2024 (Press Ki Taquat Bureau):

Kashmir is preparing for a particularly challenging winter this year, as weather specialists forecast significant snowfall and extended periods of cold, largely attributed to the La Niña phenomenon. This natural climate occurrence cools the Pacific Ocean and influences global weather patterns, typically resulting in colder winters and increased rainfall across South Asia, including the Kashmir region. The Indian Meteorological Department has confirmed the emergence of La Niña, indicating that while current conditions are neutral to weak, a strengthening is anticipated, which could lead to an even more severe winter in Kashmir.

Meteorologists have noted that previous La Niña events, such as those in 2018-19 and 2021-22, brought substantial snowfall to the area. Dr. Mukhtar, a weather expert, explained that La Niña alters atmospheric behavior, resulting in atypical rainfall and lower temperatures. He anticipates that this winter may experience more frequent snowfalls and prolonged cold spells compared to recent years. The IMD has forecasted that winter conditions will intensify, particularly from mid-December onward. Dr. emphasized the importance of learning from historical weather patterns, as last year’s milder conditions due to El Niño contrast sharply with the expected severity of this year’s La Niña. The likelihood of heavy snow and rain poses a risk of disrupting daily life, underscoring the need for residents to prepare adequately. In response to these challenges, the government is taking proactive measures, with the Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) implementing strategies to minimize power outages during the harsh winter months. As Kashmir enters this cold season, residents are urged to brace for potential disruptions and adverse weather conditions. Historically, severe weather has isolated the Kashmir valley, but with the nearing completion of the four-laning of the Jammu–Srinagar highway and the anticipated train connectivity by January 26, commuters are expected to experience fewer inconveniences.
