The profound bond between renowned comedian Jaswinder Singh Bhalla and his dear friend Bal Mukand Sharma, which spanned nearly five decades, has reached a poignant conclusion as Sharma grapples with the loss of his lifelong companion. Their friendship took root in 1977 when they became classmates at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), both pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree. What began as a simple camaraderie on campus evolved into a remarkable partnership that brought joy and laughter to the people of Punjab, particularly during some of the region’s most challenging times. The duo collaborated on various projects, including audio cassettes, stage performances, and the beloved Chhankata series, where Bhalla portrayed the character of Chacha Chatar Singh and Sharma played his clever ‘bhatija’. Their humor, deeply influenced by the Mirasi tradition of Punjab, resonated with audiences as it poignantly reflected the complexities, struggles, and humor inherent in Punjabi life, especially during the tumultuous post-militancy era of the 1990s. In a heartfelt reflection on their enduring friendship, Sharma expressed the depth of his grief, stating that a part of his heart feels lost without Bhalla, emphasizing the inseparable nature of their relationship, which extended beyond the stage and into their daily lives in Mohali.
