The FIDE World Championship Match 2026 between reigning champion D Gukesh and challenger Javokhir Sindarov will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 25 to December 15, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced on Monday.

The contest will be the youngest World Championship match in history, with both Gukesh and Sindarov set to be 20 years old when play begins. It also reflects a changing of the guard in world chess, as two of the game’s brightest young stars compete for its biggest prize following an era dominated by experienced champions.
The World Championship will be played over 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points crowned champion. If neither player reaches that mark and the score is tied at 7-7, the title will be decided through a series of tie-break games.
FIDE Interim President Viswanathan Anand said several countries, including India, the United States, and Cyprus, had expressed interest in hosting the event before Geneva was selected.
“Several countries expressed a strong interest in hosting the FIDE World Championship Match, including India, the United States and Cyprus,” Anand said.
“After carefully considering all the proposals, FIDE has decided to stage the match on neutral soil and bring it to Geneva, a city with a historic tradition of bringing nations and cultures together.
“We look forward to welcoming the global chess community to Switzerland. Local chess fans will have the opportunity to experience world-class chess in person, while millions around the globe can follow the battle online as the duel for the highest title in chess unfolds,” he added.
