Hisar, April 16 (Press ki taquat bureau): A recent revelation in Haryana indicates that 63% of the state’s population falls under the BPL category, based on family IDs known as Parivar Pehchan Patras (PPPs). The Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department data shows 1,80,93,475 BPL individuals on 44,90,017 BPL cards in the state, with the current population estimated at 2.86 crore.
Concerns have been raised regarding the accuracy of this information, as some believe that families with higher incomes have managed to obtain BPL cards to access government benefits like free foodgrain and cheaper ration. Depot holders in both rural and urban areas have reported instances where families in better financial standing have acquired BPL cards to avail of these schemes. Faridabad has the highest number of BPL families, followed by Mewat, Hisar, and Karnal, despite the latter two being prosperous districts.
Sociologists like Prof Jitender Prasad have pointed out that the data compilation agencies may have failed to verify and authenticate the information properly. The division of data among SC and BC communities also raises doubts about its accuracy, with suggestions that political motivations may have influenced the lack of verification.
