The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that nearly 10,000 deaths have occurred due to COVID-19 in December. The Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, mentioned that the increase in cases is due to people gathering during holidays, leading to a surge in COVID-19 cases. He stated that during the month of December, the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals in nearly 50 countries increased by 42 percent, with a majority of cases coming from cities in Europe and America. Ghebreyesus mentioned that although the number of deaths is relatively low compared to the peak of the pandemic, these deaths could have been prevented. Governments have been advised to maintain surveillance and continue providing treatment and vaccines to the public as the cases continue to rise. Ghebreyesus also mentioned that the Omicron variant is spreading globally and it is important to monitor its impact.
