FEBRUARY 2,2024 (press ki taquat bureau):
Yashasvi Jaiswal displayed remarkable confidence as he played an unbeaten innings of 179 runs off 257 balls, single-handedly driving India to a total of 336 for six on the first day of the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam. This outstanding performance secured his position at the top of the batting order for the foreseeable future. Unlike the previous match, Jaiswal ensured that he converted his strong start into a substantial hundred. However, the other Indian batsmen failed to capitalize on the favorable batting conditions. At the end of the day’s play, Jaiswal had R Ashwin (5) as his partner. With this innings, Jaiswal now has two centuries and two fifties in just his 10th Test innings. His innings consisted of 17 boundaries and five sixes. India scored 111 runs in the final session, losing three wickets, including Axar Patel (27 off 51) and K S Bharat (17 off 23). England’s debutant bowlers, Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed, picked up two wickets each. Rajat Patidar, also making his debut, played onto his stumps while defending against leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed. A total of 93 overs were bowled, with four spinners in operation. India, trailing 0-1 in the series, aims to reach a total of at least 500 on day two and put pressure on the England batsmen on a pitch that is expected to offer variable bounce from day three onwards. Despite the favorable conditions for batting, the injury to Ravindra Jadeja has resulted in a longer tail for India, which will need to contribute significantly for India to reach a competitive total. James Anderson, playing his first game since July last year, was the most economical and effective bowler for England, with figures of 17-3-30-1. However, England’s inexperienced spin attack, including debutant Shoaib Bashir, Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed, and Joe Root, struggled to extract much from the pitch. Shoaib Bashir, a 20-year-old off-spinner, stood out among the spinners due to his tall structure, which allowed him to generate more bounce. He claimed the prized wicket of Rohit Sharma in the first session. In the 18th over, the Indian captain’s innings came to an end as off-spinner Bashir bowled a delivery that spun sharply. Rohit, attempting to flick the ball, unfortunately directed it straight into the hands of Ollie Pope positioned at leg-slip.
