In the midst of an ongoing stalemate, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unexpectedly visited the protest site where junior doctors were demonstrating on Saturday. During her visit, she expressed her commitment to addressing their grievances and assured the doctors that appropriate measures would be taken if any wrongdoing was identified. The Chief Minister’s presence was marked by her empathetic approach, as she acknowledged the difficult circumstances the doctors faced while protesting in adverse weather conditions, describing her visit as a crucial effort to resolve the ongoing crisis.
Speaking to the doctors gathered outside the Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, Banerjee emphasized her belief in the importance of democratic expression, stating that she would not take punitive actions against the protesting medics, contrasting the situation in West Bengal with that of Uttar Pradesh. Despite her reassurances, the doctors maintained their stance, indicating that they would not relent on their demands until meaningful discussions took place. Accompanied by the Director General of Police, Rajiv Kumar, Banerjee reiterated her dedication to ensuring justice and urged the Central Bureau of Investigation to expedite their inquiry into the tragic incident involving a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, promising that accountability would be upheld.
