India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, will have his workload carefully managed throughout the ongoing tour of England. Following the loss in the first Test, the Indian team has reaffirmed its strategy to rest Bumrah for two of the five Tests. Despite having bowled 43.4 overs at Headingley, the 31-year-old is expected to be sidelined for the upcoming second Test, which is set to take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham starting July 21. In light of this, we explore three potential candidates who could step into the playing XI in Bumrah’s absence.

Arshdeep Singh emerges as a strong contender to fill Bumrah’s shoes, capable of taking the new ball and adding depth to the bowling lineup. While it is important to note that no player can truly replicate Bumrah’s unique skill set in Test cricket, the left-arm seamer has proven himself as a genuine wicket-taker. Although he has yet to make his Test debut, Arshdeep has showcased his talent in County Cricket, claiming 66 wickets in 21 first-class matches. His ability to make the ball move will not only enhance India’s bowling attack but also introduce a left-handed option, which could be advantageous. However, the question remains: can he deliver an impact comparable to that of Bumrah?

Another viable option for India is Akash Deep, who has already participated in seven Test matches, securing 15 wickets at an average of 35.2. Having made his Test debut against England last year in Ranchi, he has also demonstrated his capability with the bat, providing valuable support to the lower order. Given the vulnerabilities exposed in India’s batting lineup during the Headingley Test, Akash Deep’s inclusion could offer much-needed reinforcement. With the red ball’s tendency to move in English conditions, he has the potential to make a significant contribution if given the chance in the second Test.

Lastly, the inclusion of Nitish Reddy in the playing XI would bring a fresh dynamic to India’s bowling attack for the second Test. Reddy has previously shown promise with the bat during the tour of Australia, although he was not extensively utilized as a bowler. Nevertheless, he possesses the ability to swing the red ball and can be instrumental in breaking crucial partnerships. His addition could provide essential support to the primary bowlers, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the team.
