The Supreme Court today dismissed an appeal filed by the Punjab government, challenging the cancellation of the FIR registered in 2021 against Sukhbir Singh Badal, the leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The High Court had deemed the FIR, filed under the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897, as frivolous, including the violation of orders by government officials. Sukhbir Badal was accused of being involved in illegal mining activities, threats, and unlawful actions carried out by a private company in the Baisakhi village of Amritsar district. Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan expressed surprise and stated that the complainant did not approach the Supreme Court, but only the state government appealed against the cancellation of the FIR by the High Court. The Supreme Court remarked, “Without a doubt, this case is frivolous.”
