After the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada, there has been a significant decrease in the number of study permits issued to Indian students by Canada. Immigration Minister Mark Miller stated in an interview that he believes this decrease in numbers is unlikely to increase in the near future. The processing capacity to handle many applications in India has been reduced. As a result, Indian students are being encouraged to pursue their studies in other countries. These factors have led to a drastic decline in the number of study permits issued to Indian students in the fourth quarter of last year, dropping from 108,940 to 14,910, a decrease of 86 percent.
