Farmers’ protest continues for the third day today. A large number of farmers are standing at the Haryana-Punjab borders. There is strict surveillance by the police on the borders of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, along with Delhi. The police have set up several barricades to stop the protesting farmers. The government has held talks on three occasions to end the farmers’ protest. The demand to enact a law guaranteeing minimum support price, along with the demands of labor unions and farmer unions, has led to a nationwide (rural) shutdown announced by the farmer unions today. The shutdown will be in effect from 6 am to 4 pm. Even before this, on Thursday, farmers sat on railway tracks at several places in Punjab. Two trains were canceled. Six trains have been diverted on the Ludhiana-Sahnewal-Chandigarh route. Two have been terminated in the short term. Some trains on the Delhi-Amritsar route have been sent via other routes. The farmers have also blocked several toll plazas.
