Kolkata :
The highly anticipated verdict regarding the heinous rape and murder of a doctor on duty at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that sparked widespread outrage and extensive protests across the nation, is set to be announced on Saturday. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer affiliated with the city police, faces charges for the brutal crime committed against the postgraduate trainee at the state-run facility in north Kolkata on August 9 of the previous year. The judgement will be rendered on Saturday, marking 57 days since the trial began under the jurisdiction of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das at the Sealdah court. The Kolkata Police initially apprehended Roy on August 10, just a day after the discovery of the victim’s body in the hospital’s seminar room. Subsequently, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which has called for the death penalty for the accused. The in-camera proceedings concerning the rape and murder commenced on November 12, during which 50 witnesses were examined, and the hearings concluded on January 9. The victim’s parents have expressed their belief that additional individuals were complicit in the crime and have filed a petition for further investigation, hoping for the arrest and prosecution of these alleged accomplices. The brutal nature of the crime has incited nationwide protests, particularly among junior doctors in Kolkata, who have demanded justice for the victim and enhanced security measures in public hospitals. Political opposition, including parties such as the BJP and CPI(M), has also voiced their condemnation of the crime, although the most prominent demonstrations have been led by civil society members advocating for justice, with many participating in midnight rallies dubbed “Reclaim the Night” to honor the victim, referred to by some as “Abhaya” and by others as “Tilottama.”
