US President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to implementing reciprocal tariffs as a countermeasure against the elevated tariffs that New Delhi has placed on certain American imports. During a press conference, Trump articulated his stance by stating, “Reciprocal. If they tax us, we tax them the same amount.” He emphasized that the current trade dynamics are skewed in favor of other nations, particularly highlighting that the United States has been subjected to numerous taxes without imposing equivalent tariffs in return. In the context of a potential trade agreement with China, Trump pointed out that countries like India and Brazil impose significant tariffs on American goods, which he believes necessitates a response. He elaborated on the principle of reciprocity, questioning the fairness of a situation where India could impose a 100 percent tariff while the U.S. would not reciprocate. Trump underscored that if these countries choose to levy high tariffs, the United States would respond in kind. Additionally, his choice for Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, echoed this sentiment, indicating that the concept of reciprocity would be a fundamental principle guiding the Trump administration’s trade policies, asserting that the treatment received by the U.S. should dictate the treatment it extends to others.
