A man opened fire on Sukhbir Singh Badal, the chief of the Shiromani Akali Dal and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, while he was performing his penance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday morning. The shooter, identified as Narayan Singh Chaura, was quickly subdued by bystanders and apprehended. According to ADCP Harpal Singh, security measures were in place, and Badal was well-protected during the incident. Chaura had been present at the temple the day before and had even paid his respects before the attack. Fortunately, no one was injured by the gunfire.
Badal, dressed in a blue ‘sewadar’ uniform, was at the temple as part of a religious punishment for misconduct during his time in office from 2007 to 2017. He was performing various duties like washing utensils and cleaning, following a ruling from the Akal Takht that deemed him ‘tankhaiya’ for his past actions. SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema expressed gratitude to Guru Nanak for protecting Badal during the shooting, emphasizing the importance of faith and community support in such trying times.
