A key factor in the BJP’s decision to choose Gupta was her relatively young age. The party has been promoting younger leaders in recent years, as seen in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, where senior leaders were replaced by fresh faces. The trend continues in Delhi, with the BJP aiming to infuse vitality into its leadership.
The BJP has appointed senior party leader Rekha Gupta as the new chief minister of Delhi. The announcement comes after the Delhi BJP legislative meeting, and the appointment of National Secretary Om Prakash Dhankar and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad as central observers to oversee the selection process.
Rekha Gupta, a seasoned BJP leader, has had a long political career, starting from her leadership in student politics. Currently serving as the General Secretary of Delhi BJP, the 50-year-old leader won the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) seat in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, securing 68,200 votes.
