New Delhi, August 8 (Press ki taquat bureau): The opposition staged a protest against the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, with Congress MP KC Venugopal characterizing the legislation as “draconian” and a direct “assault on the Constitution.” Following the request from Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to present the bill, Venugopal, who had previously filed a notice to contest its introduction, accused the government of infringing upon religious freedoms and undermining the federal structure of the nation. He asserted, “This is a draconian law and a fundamental attack on the Constitution,” emphasizing the detrimental implications of the bill. Venugopal further remarked that the electorate had previously reprimanded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its divisive tactics, yet the party persisted in such strategies, particularly in light of the forthcoming assembly elections in states like Haryana and Maharashtra.
