Nagpur, Three tigers and a leopard tragically succumbed to avian influenza at an animal rescue center in Nagpur, Maharashtra, which has led officials to issue a warning to zoos across the region. This unfortunate incident, which took place at the end of last month, prompted the Central Government to release an advisory urging zoos to implement necessary safety measures. Shatanik Bhagwat, the divisional manager of the Gorewada project, explained that these big cats were transferred to the Gorewada Rescue Centre from Chandrapur due to previous conflicts between humans and wildlife. The tigers arrived at the center in the second week of December, while the leopard had been there since May. Bhagwat noted that the animals exhibited various symptoms, including limping and fever, during the third week of December. Samples were sent to Bhopal for analysis, and the results, which came back on January 2, confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus. He also mentioned that a thorough disinfection process is currently being carried out in accordance with guidelines from both the Central and state governments.
