The fourth day of the seven-day Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS) training programme, organised by the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA), Chandigarh, at Shri Guru Arjan Dev Government College, Tarn Taran, focused on strengthening the knowledge and life skills of NSS volunteers through interactive sessions on Lightning & Thunderstorms, Heat Waves, Drug Abuse Awareness, and Team Building Activities.
The training was conducted by the MGSIPA Chandigarh team comprising Mr. Ankur Sharma (Course Coordinator, YAMS Punjab), Mr. Sachin Sharma (Disaster Management Specialist), Mr. Ayush Thakur (Disaster Management Specialist), Mr. Johnson (Master Trainer), Ms. Komal (Master Trainer), and Ms. Prerna (Master Trainer).
During the disaster management sessions, volunteers were sensitised about the causes, impacts, preparedness measures and safety guidelines related to lightning and thunderstorms. The trainers explained the importance of early warning systems, safe shelter practices, and the precautions to be followed before, during and after lightning incidents to minimise the risk of casualties.
A comprehensive session on Heat Waves highlighted the increasing frequency of extreme heat events due to climate change and their impact on human health and daily life. Volunteers learned about the identification of heat-related illnesses, preventive measures, hydration practices and community awareness strategies to reduce the adverse effects of heat waves.
A special awareness session on Drug Abuse Prevention educated volunteers about the harmful physical, psychological and social consequences of substance abuse. Participants were encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles, resist peer pressure, and become ambassadors of awareness within their communities to promote a drug-free society.
To enhance leadership, communication and coordination skills, the trainers also conducted Team Building Activities, where volunteers actively participated in group exercises, problem-solving tasks and collaborative challenges. These activities strengthened mutual trust, teamwork, decision-making abilities and the importance of effective coordination during emergency response operations.
The interactive sessions witnessed enthusiastic participation from NSS volunteers, who actively engaged in discussions, practical activities and group exercises. The Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme continues to empower young volunteers with disaster preparedness, life-saving knowledge, leadership qualities and a strong sense of social responsibility, enabling them to serve society effectively during emergencies.
