The alliance of opposition parties ‘India’ suffered a major blow when the Congress and the Trinamool Congress clashed over the distribution of seats in Bengal for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Congress state president Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary said that the oldest party will not beg for a seat from the TMC. On the other hand, the party under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee said that bad mouthing of alliance partners and sharing of seats cannot go together. Chaudhary, a staunch critic of the TMC, attacked the ruling party in Bengal, accusing it of being busy “serving Prime Minister Narendra Modi” instead of strengthening the opposition alliance. His remarks drew a sharp reaction from the TMC, which criticized Chaudhary and warned the Congress high command to rein in its state president. The distribution of seats in both the parties has become the cause of controversy.
The media report said that TMC wants to give only two seats to Congress. But the Bengal unit of the Congress does not accept this. In the 2019 elections, the TMC won 22 seats in the Lok Sabha and the Congress won two seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party won 18 seats. The war of words has been going on between the two parties for the past few days but the situation worsened on Thursday. Criticizing the TMC, Chaudhary said that it is not serious about forming an alliance with the Congress in Bengal.
