The Israeli military launched an airstrike on the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh on Friday, marking the first such attack since the November 2024 ceasefire. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strike targeted a Hezbollah facility used for storing drones.
Evacuation Orders Issued Before the Attack
Prior to the strike, the IDF issued evacuation orders to Lebanese residents, warning them to leave buildings associated with Hezbollah. In response, the Lebanese government suspended classes and instructed students, teachers, and administrative staff to evacuate the area.
Rocket Fire from Lebanon Triggers Israeli Response
The airstrike followed the interception of two projectiles fired from Lebanon into northern Israel. While Hezbollah denied involvement in the rocket attacks, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that Beirut and northern Israel would be treated equally in terms of security responses.
International Reactions and Ceasefire Concerns
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli strike, calling for international intervention. French President Emmanuel Macron also criticized the attack, describing it as a breach of the ceasefire agreement. The situation has raised concerns over the stability of the truce and the potential for renewed hostilities.
Ceasefire at Risk Amid Rising Tensions
The November 2024 ceasefire had ended months of cross-border violence, but continued clashes threaten to reignite conflict in the region. With tensions escalating, both Israel and Hezbollah are facing increasing pressure to de-escalate the situation and uphold the fragile peace.
