Sumit Joshi 28 Mar 2025 : Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has been granted interim anticipatory bail by the Madras High Court till April 7 in connection with his controversial video on Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde. Kamra had claimed in his petition that he fears for his life in Maharashtra and cannot approach the state’s courts.
Madras High Court’s Decision
The court ruled that Kamra must execute a bond to the satisfaction of the judicial magistrate in Vanur, Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district. In his plea, Kamra stated that he had moved from Mumbai to Tamil Nadu in 2021 and has been living there since then. He also argued that he fears arrest by Mumbai Police.
Mumbai Police Issues Second Summons
Mumbai’s Khar Police Station had sent a second summons to Kamra on March 31, asking him to appear for questioning. The summons was issued after his comments about Eknath Shinde in a recent stand-up show sparked controversy.
What’s Next for Kunal Kamra?
The interim bail is valid only until April 7, after which Kamra may have to face further legal proceedings. The case could see hearings in both Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu courts.
