Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reaching out to the people of Muslim-majority Lakshadweep, which witnessed large-scale protests against the reforms implemented by his government, today said that the archipelago is small but has a big heart.

The Prime Minister said this after inaugurating and laying foundation stones of various projects worth Rs 1,150 crore related to technology, energy, water resources, health and education sectors in the union territory here. Hundreds of islanders including women and children participated in this ceremony. The Prime Minister addressed him as ‘Kudumbangagaal’ (family member) in Malayalam.

Mr. Modi described the beauty of Lakshadweep beyond words and talked about visiting Agathi, Bangaram and Kavaratti to meet the residents. He said, “Though the geographical area of Lakshadweep is small, but the hearts of the people are as deep as the ocean.” I am very happy because of the love and blessings I am getting here. I thank you all.” He announced to develop a special plan for Lakshadweep under the Swadesh Darshan Yojana, which would focus on its unique attractions. Emphasizing its potential, he highlighted the two Blue-Flag beaches at Kadmat and Suheli Deeps and the upcoming water villa projects.

The Prime Minister said that Lakshadweep is emerging as a top cruise tourism destination where the number of tourists has increased five times compared to five years ago. Modi encouraged people to explore their own country and urged them to visit at least 15 places in the country before considering international travel. He specially recommended visiting Lakshadweep and said that its beauty surpasses many world places.

Mr. Modi also mentioned the steps taken for Hajj visa which have benefited the people of Lakshadweep. He also mentioned ease of Haj visa, digitization of visa process and allowing women to go for Haj without ‘Moharram’. He said that with these efforts, there has been a significant increase in the number of Indians going for Umrah. The Prime Minister assured the people of Lakshadweep that the Central Government is committed to enhancing their standard of living, travel facilities and business opportunities. In the ceremony, Modi gave laptops to students under the laptop scheme and distributed bicycles to school students under ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’.
