Toronto, After months of speculation, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada officially announced his resignation from both his role as Prime Minister and as the leader of the Liberal Party on Monday. This decision came in the wake of the resignation of his former ally and Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, which had significantly weakened his position and led to increased calls for his departure from not only opposition leaders but also a number of Liberal MPs. Trudeau’s resignation marks a significant turning point for Canada, which is currently navigating a landscape of internal political changes and various global challenges. In a meeting with Governor General Mary Simon, he proposed to prorogue Parliament until March 24 to allow for the selection of a new party leader. He emphasized the importance of providing Canadians with a genuine choice in the upcoming election, highlighting the need for new leadership amid the turmoil within the party. In his heartfelt address to the nation, Trudeau expressed his intention to step down as party leader and Prime Minister after the Liberal Party has chosen its next leader through a thorough and competitive process. He had already reached out to the party president to initiate this process, stating that it was evident he could not be the best candidate for the election while embroiled in internal conflicts. Reflecting on his time in office since 2015, he recounted his commitment to the country and its people, mentioning efforts to bolster the middle class, support one another during the pandemic, promote reconciliation, uphold free trade, stand with Ukraine, and combat climate change. Trudeau described himself as a “fighter,” passionately asserting that his dedication to Canadians has always driven him, and he remains focused on what is best for the country, despite the challenges he faced in recent times.
