Seoul, South Korea’s anti-corruption agency announced on Monday that it has requested the police to take charge of executing an arrest warrant for the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. This request follows a failed attempt to carry out the arrest on Friday, which was marked by a tense standoff where presidential guards formed a human chain to prevent investigators from accessing the premises. A collaborative team from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and the police is currently looking into serious allegations that Yoon orchestrated an insurrection through his brief declaration of martial law. In a statement to the media, the CIO confirmed that they had sent a notice to the police to facilitate this takeover. This development has sparked frustration among Yoon’s critics, who are discontented with the CIO’s inability to execute the arrest warrant, which is set to expire at midnight on Monday (1500 GMT). A police representative informed the Yonhap news agency that they are “reviewing the law internally” in light of the CIO’s request. Meanwhile, Yoon’s legal team contends that the anti-corruption agency lacks the legal authority under South Korean law to investigate cases involving accusations of insurrection.
